Hematite

Hematite is heavy in a way that's genuinely surprising the first time you hold it — dense, metallic-gray, almost cold to the touch. Its name comes from the Greek word for blood, because when hematite is ground into powder, it turns a deep red, and that red pigment has been used since prehistory. There's a striking contrast in that history: a stone that looks like solid metal, but reveals blood-red the moment it's broken down.

Meaning & Symbolism

Hematite's nine properties combine grounded stability with confident, communicative action and material growth — an unusually complete set, since most heavily grounding stones lean purely defensive or protective. Within contemporary practice, hematite is often distinguished from other grounding stones (like black tourmaline or black obsidian) by this added active and prosperous quality: it's associated less with staying safe and more with standing firm while still moving forward, speaking up, leading, or steadily building material security.
